In 2008, the Norwegian company Prox Dynamics AS began to develop the world's smallest drone at the time, the PD-100 Black Hornet (Black Hornet), or "Black Hornet" for short. Its fuselage has a total length of 16 cm, a height of 2.5 cm, a rotor of 10 cm, and a weight of only 18 grams. Using batteries as energy to drive 2 micro motors, it can fly for about 20 minutes. The farthest remote control operation distance is 1000 meters.

Three optical cameras are installed on the nose of the "Black Bee" micro UAV. The top one is aimed straight ahead, the other middle one is arranged at a 45-degree angle downward, and the bottom one faces straight down. In addition, it is also equipped with an accelerometer, gyroscope, air pressure sensor, and a GPS signal receiver and many other tiny components. Such a tiny drone has powerful functions, including navigation, video recording, hover shooting and other functions, which can provide image and video reconnaissance services. Not afraid of severe cold and heat, not afraid of rain and wet, and can withstand a maximum wind of 12 meters.

Due to the small size of the fuselage, the target characteristics of the "Black Bee" UAV are very inconspicuous. No sound can be heard from a distance of 5 meters, and it is difficult to find its figure at a distance. It is very difficult to find, and it is not easy to shoot down with firearms. It is named "Black Bee" because its flight sound is similar to the sound of "Black Hornet" flapping its wings. Based on these advantages, the "Black Bee" UAV is very suitable as an individual reconnaissance UAV.

In December 2016, Flir, a leading US manufacturer of thermal imaging sensors, directly acquired Norway's Prox Dynamics AS and improved it. The latest improved model "Black Bee 3" has the same length, which is still 168 mm, but its weight has increased from 18 grams to 32 grams. The performance has also been further improved, the maximum battery life has been increased from 20 minutes to 25 minutes, the remote control transmission distance has been increased from 1,000 meters to 2,000 meters, and photoelectric sensors and thermal imaging cameras have been added to perform surveillance tasks at night. "You get what you pay for", each "Black Bee 3" reconnaissance system weighs about 1.3 kilograms, including 2 "Black Bee 3" UAVs and a set of control equipment, but the price is as high as 195,000 US dollars (2018 annual face value)!

"Black Bee 3" UAV

In view of its powerful performance, easy to carry, control, suitable for covert reconnaissance and other advantages, it can adapt to most combat environments such as positional warfare and street fighting, the price is still excellent value for money.

As early as 2011, the British Army purchased an early version of this UAV for missions in Afghanistan and achieved excellent results. According to reports from front-line troops, using the aircraft in street battles or in wild areas can greatly reduce the casualties of being ambushed by Taliban militants. Despite the high price, 19 countries, including the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia, took a fancy to its extraordinary performance and purchased and installed their own troops. Since 2018, the United States has begun to purchase "Black Bee 3" in large quantities, which was once the envy of most countries.

Now, our country no longer have to envy! At this year's Zhuhai Air Show, Ireeda brought the "Hummingbird" series of ultra-micro reconnaissance drones to the exhibition, becoming the smallest drone at this air show. In fact, as early as the 15th Abu Dhabi International Defense Exhibition in February this year, the "Hummingbird" reconnaissance drone developed by the company made its debut at the exhibition, attracting the attention of many attendees.

It is understood that the target of the Hummingbird Supermicro reconnaissance drone is the "Black Bee 3" drone of Prox Dynamics. This drone has more powerful performance, but the price is cheaper.

1. Although the sparrow is small, it has all the internal organs.

The matchbox-sized "Hummingbird" drone body integrates thousands of components, including laser sensors, optical flow cameras, horizontal cameras, 45-degree cameras, thermal imaging sensors, removable batteries, and more. Regardless of its small size, with such a high degree of integration, the technical difficulty of mass production is very high, and it is a test of the technological level of the developer.

A brief introduction to the layout of the main components of the "Hummingbird" UAV

The Hummingbird is 14.8 cm long, plus the tail rotor is 17.4 cm long, the main rotor diameter is only 13 cm, the height is 4.6 cm, and the weight is only 35 grams, which is 3 grams heavier than the "Black Bee 3" UAV, but it has stronger performance." There are 4 cameras installed on the fuselage of the "Hummingbird" drone. The top of the head is a forward-facing camera for detecting forward targets; the bottom is an infrared thermal imaging camera for night detection; It is a visible light lens with a 45-degree angle. It is the main camera. It can record images and detect a large range of images. It is mainly used to detect ground targets. The camera under the tail beam can be used for optical flow horizontal positioning. All four cameras can achieve 1080p high-definition real-time. Image transmission, under normal circumstances, the image transmission distance is more than 2 kilometers.

2. Small size and powerful performance.

This UAV is independently developed by my country and has various functions such as optical flow positioning, laser obstacle avoidance and thermal imaging. It can complete tasks such as approaching reconnaissance and can be connected to the tactical command system to effectively improve situational awareness and intelligence acquisition capabilities. .

The drone is not only equipped with a visible light camera, but also an infrared thermal imaging camera. Reconnaissance can be carried out smoothly both day and night. In order to achieve indoor reconnaissance, the aircraft is equipped with miniature TOF lidars on 4 sides, which can perform intelligent obstacle avoidance.

The "Hummingbird" UAV also has a battery life of 25 minutes and a communication distance of 2 kilometers. What is even more amazing is that it can also access the tactical command system!

Compared with the "Black Bee 3" UAV, my country's "Hummingbird" UAV is safer and smarter to fly. The link function is also more powerful, which can support 1080p real-time video backhaul at most, and support the bee group network technology. Currently, it can support 16 aircraft formations. The ground station can be connected to the fuselage of the tactical finger. The target characteristics of the "Hummingbird" UAV are very inconspicuous, and it cannot be seen or heard from a little further away. Command systems such as ATAK, the command center can remotely grasp the information status of the end of the battlefield in real time, and improve the accuracy and efficiency of command decision-making.

With its tiny fuselage, the "Hummingbird" UAV's target characteristics are very inconspicuous, and it cannot be seen or heard from a little further away. With this advantage, the "Hummingbird" UAV can easily achieve covert reconnaissance.

In terms of military use, the "Hummingbird" UAV is very suitable for performing military tasks such as counter-ambush, counter-sniper, night special operations, and street fighting.

In terms of police use, the "Hummingbird" drone can be used to perform tasks such as searching for hiding places of criminals, chasing criminal suspects, and searching and rescuing survivors.

In terms of civilian use, the "Hummingbird" UAV can be used for inspection of small and dangerous application scenarios such as dangerous pipelines and chemical warehouses, and has broad application prospects.

3. Compared with the "Black Bee 3" UAV, the "Hummingbird" UAV is cheaper.

Compared with the "Black Bee 3", which is about 1.3 million ($195,000), "Hummingbird" drone price is much lower!
